I've always considered the first year to be equal to 15 human years (they are basically in puberty at the end of their first year), and 7 years for each year after.

Very small dog breeds, such as Pomeranians, have an average live expectancy of 14.5 years, while very large breeds, such as the Irish Wolfhound, only have an average life expectancy of less than 7 years. In addition, some dogs are just more prone to health problems because of their physiology. For example, Bulldogs are only medium-sized but they have a very low life expectancy because of their tendency to have a lot of health problems.

[So if you compare this to the average human life expectancy, one human year would equal a little more than 5 Pomeranian dog years and over 11 Irish Wolfhound years]
