  1. As many as the plane's pilot can eat while in flight. The world record for a non-stop flight around the world is 67 hours. Assuming the plane has autopilot and a bathroom, the pilot could probably consume about 28 donuts during the flight. This is assuming that the pilot needs 2000 calories per day to survive, and each donut contains 200 calories. 67 hours is 2.8 days, so at 10 donuts per day, the pilot would eat a total of 28 donuts. Thus, it takes 28 donuts to circle the globe. But the pilot would probably get sick of eating nothing but donuts every day, so the real number is probably something like 10.

  2. According to the first web site cited below, a Krispy Kreme donut is approximately 5 inches in diameter. According to the second site (the second cite), the circumference of the Earth at the equator is 24,859.82 miles, which is 1,577,762,208 inches.

Dividing, we get approximately 315,552,442 donuts to encircle the planet.

Since that many donuts would increase any waistline, I'll ask a followup question: If, instead of putting the donuts on the surface, you wanted them to be three feet off the ground all the way around the planet, how many more donuts would you need?

  3. The Van Allan belt is an electronic belt that looks like a donut  and it encircles the Earth; so just 1 if its big enough!
