  1. Hi Kesh-Kesh,

The DVD+R and DVD-R are the two formats of DVDs. It is much like the old VHS and Beta formats in video tapes.

Today most drives are Hybrid and handle both formats. They are usually labeled DVD+/-R

The market for recordable DVD technology never settled down in favor of either the plus or dash formats, which is mostly the result of the increasing numbers of dual-format devices that can record to both formats; it has become very difficult to find new devices that can only record to one of the formats. However, because the DVD-R format has been in use since 1997, it has had a five-year lead on DVD+R. As such, older or cheaper DVD players (up to 2004 vintage) are more likely to favor the DVD-R standard exclusively, and when creating DVD’s for distribution (where the playing unit is unknown or older) the DVD-R format would normally be preferable.

My personal experience has led me towards using the +R. It is slightly better at error handling so more tolerant of dirty or damaged media and also more tolerant to the subtle differences between players.

  2. There's plenty of region formats from 1-8, if you're in the US, use region 1. if you're in the UK and related, use 2. South East Asia use 3.

I sounded like an automatic answering machine there lol.

I've noticed that while WMP plays all regions, iDVD (Apple) makes you choose your region and is locked down. another alternative to that is the FLV player for mac.

THAT'S IF WHAT YOU'RE ASKING. if you are asking for DVD+R or DVD-R (the + and -) they are developed by different companies, but they generally work in any DVD drives now days. there is a slight difference to it, is that DVD-R (2,298,496 Bytes) has a slightly (really slightly) bigger space than DVD+R (2,295,104 Bytes).

DVD-R is more popular, but DVD+R is more reliable/accurate during burning, but is not noticeable by the consumers.
