Question:

How many eggs in a basket of five?

It could be five eggs, it could be 5 baskets, it could be 5 dozen, it could be 5 x 1/2 dozen.

My grandad told me this and im still wondering about it.

  3. If this is a riddle, then it must be referring to the number of eggs in a hand - meaning the five fingers. However, I'm not sure how many that would be exactly - I can carry/hold three easily, but small children would probably only manage one.

    I am guessing that if there is a definitive single answer, it would have to be one.

    If the fingers need to meet over the egg, then it would have to be one even for an adult.

  4. If it's a basket of 5 eggs, then only five.  If it's a basket of five dozen eggs then its 60 eggs.  It's an arbitrary question...it all depends on what five "is".

    If it were going to be 5 dozens or 5 half-dozens, they would have been mentioned. Since the object/counter is omitted, it can only be because it was already mentioned earlier in the sentence, which can only be "eggs". Standard English grammar rules.

    Therefore the conclusion, if the question is taken as it is, and not as a metaphor, would be 5 eggs.

    When you first hear that question you automatically think its five eggs but its actually a pretty hard question!!!

    Here are my answers:

    If its a basket of 5 eggs = there would be 5 eggs

    If its 5 dozen = then its 60 eggs

    If its five times half a dozen eggs = then its 30 eggs

    If its five baskets then you can't really answer because you don't know how many eggs are in each basket do you?!!

    Lastly, if a basket of eggs is referring to someones hand than it could possibly be = 1 egg!

  16. If one of those eggs is a cuckoo's egg, then as soon as the cuckoo hatches then there will be 4 eggs. But then, the cuckoo will throw the other eggs out, leaving no eggs.

    The moral of the story is.......Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
