I will become a gestational surrogate mother in the summer of 2009 and I am wondering what the legal limit is because I don't want to carry too many babies.

  1. I think the typical number is about 2 to 4. I'm guessing. Women who have multiples, like 4 babies and higher, usually get that way NOT from the doctors placing all the embryos in her. They get that way because insurance will pay less of the bill if you do IVF, but pay most of the bill if you just have fertility drugs. The women do the fertility drugs, ovulate a ton and then they all implant. That's how they get like, 7-8 babies. No reputable doctor would put that many embryos purposefully into a woman. In fact, 4 is pushing it...2 is the typical number. That's how many my doctor put in to me.

Also, if you are the surrogate, whether it is in Canada or America, shouldn't YOU have a say in how many go there? I wouldn't take more than 3 if I were you. The chances of healthy babies goes WAY down even at 3. Just agreeing to 2 will be stressful enough and if one dies, there is still a chance the other will survive. Good luck...I hope you also consult a lawyer and don't depend on Yahoo Answers for the answers you need.

  2. 1, your body can only handle one, your body will reject the weaker specimen.

  3. I don't know if there is a legal limit, but from what I have heard most doctors will only transfer 2 in a young healthy woman (I have a friend doing IVF right now and this is what she tells me).  That said, if both embryos split (which happens often in IVF) and took you could end up with quads.
