How many events are in the summer olympics?

I know this ? should be a little more detailed, but give me what you got. lol. How many gold medals will be awarded. I know several will be in the same sport, but how many different sports are going on. I just learned there was some equestrian events I didn't even know about. And never even heard of handball until today. Just wondering what else is going on that I don't know about? How many different arenas are the games going on in? Sorry so many ?s in one, but if you could just tell me what you know, maybe I could piece it together. Thanks for your help. From a very new Olympic fan.

there are 28 sports and 38 disciplines of sports in the summer olympics. in each of these disciplines is a number of events. for example, swimming is one discipline and within swimming are a number of events. some sports have a number of disciplines within them, like gymnastics involves rhythmic, artistic and trampoline.
