How many expats are there living in Shanghai?

Thanks for the response. I guess Wang's 2.5 million is including domestic migrants working in the city. I know there is about 450,000 expats (foreigners only but including HK, Macau & Taiwanese) in 2006. I just trying to find out the number now. :) I'm doing research.

  1. It is a quarter of Shanghai Population. Perhaps, 2.5 million.


  2. There's no way there's 2.5 million expats in Shanghai.  Half a million, maybe.

    There are plenty none the less, and English is spoken widely enough so an expat can live easily with little or no Chinese language skills.  

  3. In 2003, it was 200,000, and rose 35% from 2004, so it's 200,000 x (1 + 0.35) ^5 = 896806 in the end of 2008~
