How many find it effective to use a small radio or tv for some backround noise while crate training your new puppy? I've crate trained before, and have been at the stage were the puppy must be ignored while yelling, and yes they eventually stop. However, I was wondering if maybe some backround noise would make it even easyier and quicker for the puppy to become comfortable and not carry on while in the crate. Anyone try this? I'm curiouse to know what your results were.

P.S I know about the whole little blanket from home, toys, all that jazz, I've trained many dogs, this is just something I'm thinking about trying on my new puppy to make crate training that much easier and more effective, so all I want to hear about is if this helped you out a little bit or not. Thanks guys and girls!

  1. When my pup began his crate training to sleep through the night, we didnt have any noise because we thought it might disturb him (I havent a clue if that true) XD

But when we leave him just for an hour or something we normally have the TV or radio playing.

It would be interesting to know if crate training overnight with noise playing would be quicker :)

  2. the radio thing didn't help, she can tell the difference between a person and a radio or TV.

  3. Yes, I use a TV.  I turn it on at night really low & when I am away.  I also use a crate cover.  I tried using a blanket to cover the crate but, my dog kept getting a hold of the blanket & chewing on it.  The dog whisperer gave me this idea from his show.  It makes the crate more den like which is comforting to them.

  4. my tv is on all day for the dogs.

LOL! appropriate programs only of course. my little terrier x and my malamute x seem enchanted with spongebob. i think it's the high pitched voices. but they will both sit looking at the tv and heads ******.

  5. My dog had a fan at her old house and still like to be around fan's. I think the background noise takes away some of the footsteps and outdoor sounds that she might be able to hear otherwise

  6. Did you know that 15% of adult dogs have separation anxiety. If the puppy is still crying and you leave it to do so, it could suffer from separation anxiety for the rest of its life.Whats the point of making a puppy suffer. I will give you my version of how to stop a puppy crying after answering your question A friend of a friend hardly ever left her dogs alone, when she did she left the T.V. on. The T.V. developed a fault, her house burnt down and the dogs died. The same thing can happen with a radio, dont go there.

The following is my method of preventing separation anxiety and starting potty training. Put your dog in a separate room if possible, then go out of this room and close the door. Open the door immediately and go into the room again, ignore your dog whilst pretending to clean the counter tops or pretend to do something else for a very short time. Go out of the room and immediately go back in again, keep doing this and gradually increase the amount of time which you stay on the other side of the door.Try to leave him in peace apart from doing the door thing.

Timing is vital and you must do this try to get back into the room BEFORE YOUR PUPPY CRIES. Eventually your puppy will go to sleep and will be convinced that you are just on the other side of the door. When you know that he is asleep stop going into the room, however you MUST LISTEN FOR HIM WAKING UP.

When you know that he is awake, go into the room lift him up and take him into the garden for a pee and whilst he is doing this say “get one” and praise him profusely. Puppies need feeding about four times a day, although he may have a pee before his feed you should also take him out again afterwards. You must always take him out when it wakes up and after he has had food or drink. It’s also a good idea to let him explore your yard/garden afterwards.

It is vital that you continue with the door thing for the first few days. To ensure that you have a happy puppy try to devote all of your time to him for the first two week.  This will also help with potty training, however he will not have any control for the first few weeks and he will pee during the night.. To help him, use newspaper that you have rubbed in one of the pees that he has done outside and leave several layers of newspaper on the floor. Hopefully he will toilet on the newspaper during the night. Don't force your dog to cross its legs in a cage, this will cause bladder and bowel problems.

  7. I think it's a great idea if the sound of a television going in the home is normal. If you aren't much of a television watcher and only turn it on once in a blue moon (like my mother) the sound of the tv going without you there may freak her/him out even more if it isn't a normal thing. However if you are like most of us tv on in the house will give her some normalcy. I have 3 pomeranians I leave at home sometimes for short periods of time and I always turn the television on, my little girl sleeps better with tv going and the two little boys like watching It's Me or the Dog (not kidding). By all means try it.
