Each container must be less than 3.4 ounces. You can take as many containers as will fit into a 1 quart ziploc bag and have the bag zip completely closed. I can fit four 3 ounce containers, 1 small travel sized toothpaste and my mascara into my ziploc. I have traveled with only that amount on a 10 day cruise with 3 days of hotel added. I did not run out of anything.

Some people  will tell you that you should just check everything. I do not trust the airlines not to lose my stuff. Not everything I have can be replaced on board.

no limit on checked baggage.  For carry on, to go through security, as many 3 oz. bottles as will fit into one one-quart ziplock bag.  However, if you buy something after you go through security, no limit (of course, within reason).
