  2. From every bud (or node), one cane stalk will initially begin to develop. Each stalk will then tiller to form a cluster of stalks. The number of tillers will depend on the variety of sugarcane and environmental conditions. The different tillers will eventually become mature sugarcane.

    This requires that the cutting is correctly planted (i.e. horizontal with some soil over the top).
