  1. the "rule" that its an inch of fish per gallon is only applicable to tetra like fish. in your case, it depends on the gorami. 3-spot gorami reach six inches long and wouldn't do well. pearl gorami are 4 inches as adults, and would be better, while dwarf gorami reach only 3 inches and would be your best bet

  2. if it's just a pair of gouramis and maybe an otto or two that would be fine... 1 inch of fish = 1 gallon for freshwater tropical... 1 inch of goldfish = 3 gallons... but that's irrelevant.

make sure you have a good filter and a good heater...

  3. Also keep in mind the larger the tank the easier it is to care for.

  4. What species of gourami? There are various types getting anything from 1" to over 24"!

The only two species I'd recommend for a 10 gallon are Honey Gouramis (1.5") and Sparkling Gouramis (1"). Dwarf Gouramis do better in 12-15 gallons plus.

  5. It depends on the species.  Some of the small species like the chocolate, sparkling, and croaking gouramis could easily be kept in a 5 gallon tank  A pair of dwarf ouramis (Colisa species, including varieties of lalia) could be kept in a 5 gallon, but a 10L would be better, with hiding places for the female.  2 males could be kept together, but watch them.

The Trichogaster species should have at least a 20L tank.

Kissing gouramis grow to 12', and should have at least a 30L tank.

The true gourami (osphronemus), the giant of the family, grows to 2 feet long and would need a much larger tank, at least 55T gallons, preferrably 75.

  6. well      every inch  of fish needs 1 gallon of water inless you have a really good pump

i sugest dwarf gourmis , they dont grow big but are nice colours

  7. No, I would say at least 30 gal, depending on how many gouramis you're getting. Believe it or not, gouramis can become very aggressive if they do not have enough space. They get territorial and will kill your platies. At least 30 gal. The last blue gourami I had was in a 20 gal tank with about 3-4 other fish and killed all of them except my pleco. He stored them in the filter. It was weird, but he obviously didn't have the space he wanted.

Good luck! Please email me if you have more questions or post more details.

    ----Edit----

If you have a 55 gal tank now, then I suggest you don't go much lower than that. How many of them do you have? Dwarfs average about 1.25"-1.75", getting as large a 2", so they should be good with a few red platies. Just be conscious of the space. The minimum size tank for about two dwarfs gouramis is 10gal. With all of the platies in there too, they will need a larger tank.
