Question:

How many gallons is my aquarium?

I have a hex aquarium. Somebody abandoned it when they moved out and my husband picked it up for me. The hood is rather crappy so I'm thinking about getting a new hood for it.

My main concern though is figuring how many gallons it holds. I'm not used to hex aquariums an everywhere online shows three measurements, but I can only think of two.

Each panel is 11 in wide and it is 25 in tall?

  1. If it's a true hexagon (6 sides) the volume is 58.9 US Gal.

  2. The area of a Hexagon is calculated by the formula:

    A = 3 * (3^.5) * (length ^2) / 2

    length = 11 in

    A = ~ 314 in ^2

    Volume is the Area of the base times the height.

    height = 25 in

    V = ~ (314 in^2) * 25 in = ~ 7859 in^3

    1 Gallon = ~231 in^3

    7859 in^3 * (1 gallon/231 in^3) = ~34 gallons.

    ^.5 is sqr root.

  3. It is about 34 gallons.

    Good Luck!

    I hope this helped!

  4. try this site:

    measure the length from the widest points along the top, and depth from front panel to back panel.
