When I buy a barrel of VP race gas, it has 55 gallons in it.

There's two kinds of "barrels".  

Modern barrels are 55 gallons.  They look like this

and you often see them used as trash cans in parks etc.

When they talk on the news about the price of crude oil, they're referring to a 42 gallon "barrel".  It doesn't actually come in barrels, it comes in tankers.  But oil is bought and sold on the market in 42-gallon units, called "barrels" probably because standard barrels were 42 gallons a long time ago.  

How much gas do you get out of a 42 gallon barrel of crude oil?  Depends a lot on the grade of crude oil.  Oil is a mix of stuff, anything from lighter butane to gas to diesel fuel to road tar.  It has to be separated out.  They have to burn 20% of the barrel just to get the energy to separate it out.

Different grades of oil have different amounts of gasoline.  "Light sweet crude" like came from Texas gives 19 gallons from a barrel.  Lousy oil might only give 5 gallons of gas per barrel.  More on the difference http://www.econbrowser.com/archives/2005...

Obviously we're using up the best oil first, so while we may not be running out of oil, we're using up the good stuff really fast.

The term "barrel ' is used to describe things that are not true barrels. Such as a barrel of beer. Actually that is a full keg and equals 35 gallons. Barrels used to deliver chemicals are steel drums, and are usually 55gallons. The oil industry refers to a barrel of crude, which I believe is 42 gallons. TAKE YOUR PICK !
