  1. 1 cubic foot = 7.48051945 US gallons

    40 x 22 x .333333 = 293.3 cubic feet

    293.3 x 7.48 = 2,194 gallons

  2. I  hope this is not homework, but there is space for  2,194.2 gallons [US, liquid].

However, there may not be any. You need to read the question carefully.

    Regards,

    Dan

  3. In US liquid measure 231cu. in equals 4 quarts = 1 gal. You must convert the feet to inches by multiplying 40 by 12 and 22 by 12. Now you should have 480in times 264in times 4in. Divide the product of those three numbers by 231 to give you 2194.2857 gals or about 2194.3 gals.

  4. The simple answer is 2194.285 gallons or 2194 gallons and 2.28564 pints. And you can find it for yourself by going to the following website. All you need to know is 40'X22'x4"=506880 cubic inches

  5. just multiple the numbers together

  6. 7.481       call it 7 1/2  gallons per cubic foot;  40 x 22 x .33=? x 7.481

  7. OK...

I am going to waste an answer here... just to help you along a little... It really is not at all that complicated.

Us  "old sailors"  (that date back before calculators) have a saying to help us remember exactly how to figure bouyancy and displacement and volume... and that saying is:

         "8 pints - 8 pounds - the world around"

Now, say it again.... "8 pints - 8 pounds - the world around"

If you just remember that... the rest is easy. This is what it means:

    8 pints weighs 8 pounds ( so obviously 1 pt = 1 lb)

since there are 8 pints in a gallon

then 1 gallon weighs 8 pounds.  Got it?

There are also 8 gallons in 1 cubic foot.

(notice everything deals with the number 8 here)

    So therefore, 1 cubic foot weighs (8 x 8)  = 64 pounds.

and,   WOW!    Wouldn't you know...  that 64 pounds is the exact weight of 1 cubic foot of sea water... (fresh water weighs slighly less - but in this case we are dealing with volume).   ( but, us "old sailors" always deal in salt water... or rum or wine.  The ones that drink the grog don't know their math - so they are swabbing the decks.)

So... from a sailors point of view - and that being your 40' x 22' or 880 cu ft. container is filled with 4" of sea water, you have  17,553.6 pints divided by 8 = 2,194.2 gallons

See... now wasn't that a lot easier? and we didn't even need a caluculator...
