  1. This is entirely dependent on which monarchy you mean and which dynasty you are talking about. For instance, the English and British monarchs since William the Conqueror, the French kings descended from Hughes Capet, etc. Can you clarify your question?

  2. Many.......depends on what country Japan, England, Thailand, A Pacific Island, Nigeria?

  3. Many monarchs could trace their royal lineage back to ancient times, some royal families like the Japanese imperial family believed they were the direct descendants from Gods when their island was first created. Some of the royal families like the ancient Egyptian, the Chinese Imperial family, the French royal family and much more, had ruled for over thousands of years before they became extinct.

However, not all monarchs that remained today are direct descendants of the first person who ruled their land. Throughout time, there had been many battles between powerful leaders, and other foreigners conquering their land. Most European royal houses that survived today are not from an "unbroken" family line (father to son). They could have either descended from a different branch of the family, or their ancestor invaded the country as a foreigner and established their own royal house.

Usually, the family line goes on for a few generations before it is switched to another royal house. For example, the uncle passed the crown to his nephew, cousin or even to a distant relative. There are hardly (with some exceptions) any royal family that has been passed down from father to son for the last 15-20 generations.
