  1. I'm not sure but I think it is either 2 or 3.  guo jingjing china's best ever female diver only competed in two events, synchro and 3m dive.  At her prime, and possibly her last Olympics, she should compete in everything, and i think the only thing she missed was the 10m board, but im not sure if that's her area.  So only 2-3.

  2. 4 i believe, 3M, 10M, 3M double & 10M double. total 8 gold for men and women. so the max 4 can one person win.

  3. as many times as they dive

  4. The Australian Olympic Committee website states four per s*x:

    Men's diving 3m springboard

    Men's diving 10m platform

Men's diving Synchronised diving 3m springboard

Men's diving Synchronised diving 10m platform

    Women's diving 3m springboard

    Women's diving 10m platform

Women's diving Synchronised diving 3m springboard

Women's diving Synchronised diving 10m platform

  5. Theoretically I think it's 4.  They would win 1 each from 10m platform and 3m springboard.  That's 2 for individual, and then they can repeat the 2 for synchronized.

China has won 6 diving gold medals with 2 to go because there are 4 each for men's and women's.

EDIT:  I don't see what the reason for getting so competitive is.  North American culture promotes more individual accomplishments, and Asian culture promotes more group accomplishments.  Psychology has shown that this really affects the way they act around others.  So Americans praise their individual best in Michael Phelps, and Chinese praise their overall gold medal accomplishment.  Not to say that Americans don't preach teamwork and Chinese don't praise Liu Xiang (despite his bad luck), but there are clearly cultural differences.

Your point only points out how readily available each swimming medal is.  There's no way if Michael Phelps were a basketball player he could win the basketball gold medal and still win 7 more, because of how much effort basketball players have to put into playing basketball each day.

There's no need to be so competitive over how many medals everyone has.  Just enjoy what the athletes are giving to us.
