Question:

How many golf team can I handle?

It is a 9 hole course and I am debating a shot gun start or tee time start.

I know that using shot gun start we can handle about 15 teams if we push it. Would using tee time start allow more teams?

  1. A shotgun start is the way to go. You could shotgun 64-72 people on a 9 hole course.  If you stuff that many people out there though, be prepared for 5-6 hour round of golf.

  2. If you use tee times, you'll need to space them out at about ten minutes apart. Some say as little as seven, but that will just make people angry when they run across slow players.

Either way, you'll get just eight or so groups off the first hour, and another eight the second.

So no. Shotgun is your best bet (But I think that 15 groups on nine holes is too many for enjoyment)

  3. A lot of outings cram 2 groups per hole for a shotgun start.  It is not ideal for pace of play - but it works especially if you are playing a "scramble" format where you only use the best of each shot.  This would allow you 18 groups all starting and finishing at roughly the same time.  So for 9 holes everyone is done in maybe 2.5 hours.  If you tried to tee off 18 groups 10 minutes apart from the first tee - you kill 3 hours just teeing off and then have to wait another 2 to 2.5 hours for the last group to finish.

  4. Yikes that is a gang mob... keep the teams to threesome for speed and to avoid the foot wedge trick.

If you are playing among friends, you may want to consider hitting from best first shot; however if you are playing competitively, play by the book and who cares who is behind you.
