How many guys wear board shorts when they are not swimming/surfing?

Question

Is it common to wear them when your just hanging around or playing sports but have no plans to go to the beach. And would you wear underwear underneath them then?

I wear board Shorts everywhere. I go kayaking then wear the board shorts all day.

ive seen guys wear boardshorts, but i would say wear a speedo underneath, not underwear

In a warmer climate, sure.  The quintessential casual wardrobe, and if you go, go commando!

I often wear them if I am engaged in some activity other than surfing or going to the beach but I refuse to wear them to someplace where they would not normally be seen.  For instance, if I am someplace like the mall and I see someone wearing boardshorts I can pretty much guarantee that they do not surf, they are just wanting people to think they do.  

As for wearing something underneath:  I don't wear anyting under them when surfing.  If I am doing somethhin else like going to the gym I will wear boxers since some of my shorts give me board short rash.
