  1. Hours and hours worth. Several different coaches. Once a certain level is achieved you have to treat instruction like a buffet... u like this a little, take a little; don't like that, don't have to take any; like something a bunch, go back for more. Most now is just having a decent COACH (not a friend, fellow player, maybe the cute chick in the corner though) watch and see the apparent things I can't see myself.

  2. When you get to a stage beyond a beginner's stage, every time you shot you learn something, and you try to do it,

or use it in your game..

You are always learning, like when you lost to that tux, Johnny, you learned something, either on shooting, or how to look at your opponent!. Was he better than you, or did you think, I'll take care of him and his tux?, not even thinking about the game, yours or his!.

  3. my ex..who's one of the best in this state (Joe DeLaO) has tried to teach me...I denied his offer....I'm one of those ppl who don't want anyone telling me how to shoot a ball...I wanted to learn on my own..took a while, but I'm still climbing...No, it won't be a bad idea, but If I ever do make it "up there"..I don't want to give someone else the credit...bad me,huh? lol......I don't know Johnny..maybe one of these days I'll go all the way down to H town and have u give me some pointers :)...haha..DreO

  4. I've never had formal lessons; you'll just have to take my word for it that my husband is a great player and a great teacher...It seems like a heck of a coincidence, I know, but he's the only non-certified person in the world I'd want to learn anything about pool from (wait...is Bert Kinister certified? I'll listen to him :) )...He has a natural gift for teaching and coaching...even when we were running an engraving business and I knew quite a bit more than he did about just about all aspects of the actual engraving, when we hired new employees, he always did the training. He has that ability to just make everything very clear and as simple as possible.

p.s. I heartily believe that I'm in a unique situation...I think formal instruction can help a willing person's game more quickly than anything else.

  5. Never had any formal training , probably wouldn't hurt though. I learn like most people do, by playing and watching. I think I learn more by watching though. Usually when a player does something stupid I remind myself to never do that. And when a player does something great I'll walk right up to him and say show me how you did that. Most of the time they are more than happy to show me too.

  6. Not really Johnny...do you count Bert Kinister training tapes?.....watch and learn a lot at tournaments....when someone shoots something that I did not understand how....I will ask him for the "english" or how he did it.....most guys I play with are really great and willing to help out....if I see my buddy do something and I can improve on it for him....I will show him....really would love to take formal lessons from someone in the know!!

  7. Hey Johnny.  I'm thinking that you probably didn't really expect me to answer this one because it's pretty obvious what a big supporter I am of formal instruction.  In any case, I like the point that you make about being able to learn even after playing for many years.  I'm still learning all of the time and from all different sources.  I think that formal instruction is the single best thing I ever did for my game, but it's not the only way that I learn.  Personal experience is a great teacher, but my experience is tempered with the lessons that I've learned.  I think that just having a bunch of experiences by itself without some sort of context or framework is inefficient.  I have so much to learn and I look forward to all of it and I'm thankful that I have a firm foundation on which to stand.  M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.
