If n is the amount of cubes then y is the amount of hidden faces:

2(n-1)=y

In case of 5 cubes: 2(5-1)= 8 hidden faces

If you have 2 cubes in a row, there'll be 2 hidden faces (1 from each cube).

If you have 3 cubes in a row, there'll be 4 hidden faces (1 from each cube at the end and 2 from the centre cube).

If you continue like this, you'll see that the formula for n cubes is 2(n-1).

if you mean "hidden from your sight", if the cubes are touching and real close and you are directly opposite them then you will see just the five faces opposite you  and the rest are all hidden.

But if you mean hidden from, say, light, then only the faces that touch one another are hidden and that's eight faces (from what my little drawing here revealed)
