I work for the Met Police as a dispatcher, and the current name for the squad that is called out for every suspicious death is the Homicide Assessment Team. So it is a term used in London and regularly.

Also it is not an Americanism, it is the latin for killing a human being, in the same way suicide is killing oneself and infanticide is killing a child. Homicide covers all types of killing, not just a murder ie it covers manslaughter too.

There are less murders in London than in Mexico City, the figures given by another poster are correct.

"homicide" is an Amercanism that  is not used in England, we just call it murder.
