How many horsepower does one gallons (US) of gasoline produce? ?

I'm trying to convert US gallons of regular unleaded gasoline to horsepower hours. I get a figure of 49 HP hours. I realize that is theoretical. Does anyone have a practical figure as to approximately how many HP hours are produced by a gallon of regular gasoline? How about diesel??

I was reading the answer that says "twice as much as a gallon from Canada." Correction, A:  a good portion of your  USA`s  gasoline comes from Canada. B: One Canadian (Imperial) gallon equals 4.54 gallons USA. .

   I work on commercial irrigation equipment. One USA gallon of regular unleaded gas is equal to about 49 horsepower in heat units. In practical terms, about 65% of that is lost when it's burned through an engine.

    An automotive engine will produce about 15 HP hours on a gallon of gas. An automotive diesel will produce about 20 HP Hrs. on one US gallon  of #1 diesel. That's 20 HP for a period of one hour.

   The larger the engine, the better the HP hour rating. A 500 HP stationary diesel can achieve up to 22 HP Hrs. per gallon (US)  of diesel. HP hours are generally used commercial  and agricultural engine applications.

   For autos and light trucks, miles per gallons or liters per 100 KM are still the most accurate.  One US gallon is equal to four liters. 100 KM  is 62 miles.

Horsepower is a unit of power, not a unit of energy. Therefore, you can't convert the energy content of gasoline into horsepower. You can convert it to horsepower-hours, i.e. horsepower maintained over an entire hour. That's energy.

A gallon of regular unleaded gasoline contains about 36.6 kWh (kilowatt-hours), which is about 49.1 horsepower hours, as you stated.

How many horsepower it produces in an engine depends on the engine.
