How many hours a day do kittens sleep for?

Mine is 4.5 months - some days he seems asleep for about 18-20 hours and others he's tottering around sniffing at things and playing about for practically the whole day.

He generally doesn't need much encouragement to curl up on me and sleep though. I suppose this is normal?

If they have something to play with this time will be like an hour and a halve less!

normally kittens sleep for 20 hours a day. That is usually normal

yup! That's normal!  Cats sleep most of the day, then play hard, sleep some more....

they usually sleep upto 16 but maybe more depending on the cat.
