  1. Don't be fooled by other answers. Literacy should be taught every day but an hour intensive literacy for Y1 is way too much after all they are simply reception plus two months.

Your school should have a policy on this but if they don't, ensure that every child has appropriate literacy opportunities everyday. i.e. time to read, time for phonics, time for word building, time for writing whether it be emergent writing or not.

The literacy program recommended that you work specifically with ability groups every day, similarly your teaching assistant should do the same.

Remember that Literacy can also be taught in other subjects so when you are doing shared or paired reading, science or even reading a story at the end of the day here are literacy opportunities.

Lastly remember that Ofsted will be more interested in the progress made by your children from the day you get them to the day they walk in so keep your evidence, written evidence, photos and even tapes of the spoken word. Evidence of speaking and listening is the hardest to show improvement in.

  2. it should be an hour each for literacy and numeracy.

  3. I'm pretty sure it's an hour a day for literacy and an hour for numeracy. Shouldn't you know this?

  4. I'm not sure if it's the same now, but when "Literacy" as a subject and "numeracy" as a subject were put into schools (when I was in year 5) we had an hour of each every day. The teacher had a sort of wheel thing on the wall with each day and what subject within literacy we did on that day and how the hour would be broken up. I always remember Literacy Hour and Numeracy Hour. So, I'm guessing it's still at least 5 hours a week

  5. It's an hour per day for each of literacy and numeracy.

And I'm frankly horrified that you don't know this already. "Keep OFSTED happy"? How about teaching the kids to the best of your ability?
