  1. Hi Krysta!

Right now, when it is 2 p.m. in Vienna, it is also 10 p.m. in Sydney, so the answer is eight hours.

The answer depends on where in Australia you mean, and which season of the year.  Right now, in northern spring and summer, Austria is eight hours behind the Australian east coast states, 7 1/2 hours behind Australian Central Time, and 6 behind most of Western Australia.  (There are some smaller time zones too, like Eucla time and Lord Howe Islands time.)

Things change when most of Australia goes to Daylight Saving Time, between the first Sunday in October and the first Sunday of April.  (In Western Australia, at least currently, it's the last Sunday of October to last Sunday of March.)

During Southern late spring and summer, when it's 1 p.m. in Vienna, it's 11 o'clock in Sydney (ten hours time difference), 10:30 p.m. in Adelaide and 9 p.m. in Perth.  Also, it's 10 p.m. in Queensland, which does not observe Daylight Time, and 9:30 p.m. in Darwin.

I saw where another answerer simply took Sydney's GMT+10 and subtracted Vienna's GMT+1 to get nine hours, but this is mistaken except in October and one week in late March-early April because it does not take account of Daylight Saving Time.  For most of the year, the time difference between Sydney and Vienna is either eight hours (as it is right now) or 10 hours.

  2. It depends on where in Australia you are referring to.

Vienna is UTC +1:00 and Sydney is UTC +10:00 so the hour difference is 9 hours. ie Sydney is 9 hours ahead of Vienna.

Perth is UTC + 8:00 so Perth is only 7 hours ahead of Vienna
