Hard to say.  Every cop and every department is different.  Cops are elligible for overtime for more than 40 hours.   Plus some contracts call for a minimum of one hour of overtime whenever they have to appear in court.

Like the first answer stated, depends on the department. Some work 8 hours shifts, some 10, some 12. It also depends on how busy the day/night goes. If they get a late report at the end of their shift they might have to stay over for a few more hours until the report is finished.
