  1. Sorry, but POST 1036 was mistaken.  To become a PO in CA you just need a college degree (4 years).  Once you're hired, they send you to an academy (called PO Core) where you spend usually a total of about 5 weeks.  To be a Parole Agent, you can either spend two years as a corrections officer, or you need to have two years of "caseload carrying experience," which is typically satisfied by being a PO for two years.  Good luck!

  2. It all depends.  I am trying to become a probation officer myself.  I know in the state of MN, it all depends on the type of corrections it is.  If its with the state, you need a minimum of 400 full time internship hours.  Some counties you will need about 200-400 hours-full time equivilent.  It truly all depends on the jurisdiction and how bad they need someone.  Most places in MN are on a hiring freeze right now, so only the best of the best will get in.  Your chances are greater with a BA in criminal justice or higher, and volunteer work in the field you want to be in, and work as a correctional officer or something in corrections already.  I currently work full time and intern part time (bills to pay) and volunteer with another corrections program.  I intend to continue to keep this schedule up until I can get a job in the field.  The more experience you have... the better your chances.

In short, I would have to say dont expect getting  job with anything less than 250 hours of internship/volunteer work in the field.  You could also find the probation jurisdication on the web and check their minimum requirements to see what would be needed for the SLIGHTEST shot at the job.

oh and chances are... there will be no difference in the requirements for a juvenile or adult PO, just a different justice system/terms/rules.

  3. In California you hav to be a Correctional officer for about 2 years and have a BA to become a Parole or Probation officer
