  1. We unschool and I don't require any formal school work. If my kids want to do it I've got no problem with that.

Read a book, bake some cookies, draw a picture... You're always learning.

  2. My 5th grader completes approximately that much work per day, often more.  He does get breaks, I don't think you should "have" to work for 4 1/2 hours straight, but that is not an unreasonable amount of time for jr. high.  Your mom is preparing you for high school, where you should be completing 40-60 minutes of work per subject, per day, in order to qualify for a full credit in that subject.

Edit: What all does your mom count as work?  I don't know that you should sit down and do 4 1/2 hours of straight, but 4 1/2 hours of school total is not out of line.  I do count things such as reading, read alouds, activities, and Scout work in his time.  Anything academic makes it in.

In thefilthycommie's answer, you'll notice that she didn't list half of what she does as work.  Her reading, all of her math, and her work in the theatre can all be counted for credit.  These aren't things that she has to focus on as "bookwork", but they are all things that easily count as school work.

  3. It varies from day to day depending on a number of things... My concentration leve... my energy level... how much reading a lesson involves... how interested I am and if I want to do extra research or exploration... and generally what is planned for that day (though plans are really more like...gentle nudges in the right direction. Nothing set in stone)

I'd say it ranges from 3 to 7 hours per day, usually staying close to 4.

  4. I home school both of my children (Kindergarten & First grade).  They are required by their home school to have at least 5 hours  of schooling logged each day.  For a total of 100 hours/month,  920/year.

  5. I firmly maintain that assigning work in hours is stupid. Assignments are okay, but hours are just stupid. For example, a reasonable math assignment is five proofs and some work with definitions. In contrast a stupid math assignment is an hour and a half of math. I'm doing Rosetta Stone German, taking piano lessons, in a math class, and preparing for the AP history exam. I work for 2-3 hours a day and I'm doing fine. I read for fun so I don't count that in as work.

I usually get all my math homework for the week done in an hour, including checking it. I'm also surprising my math teacher with my speed, so it must be doing something. That's just one day so I don't really count it in as my average. I like math so I usually do it on the weekends, when I'm in the woods and it's freaking arctic in winter.

    30 minutes of piano

    45 minutes Rosetta Stone

    30-90 minutes of history

History really varies. If I'm having an off day I take some practice quizzes to stay sharp or if I'm really out of it, I put my history binder in order. I don't use the thing much, but organizing it passes the time and makes me think I'm doing something. I have a Sparkcharts cheater thing about the Constitution I review every day so I'll know what's basically up with the basis of my country's laws.

I know I need science, but I just haven't been able to find anything that interesting...once I've settled in to my new routine I'm probably going to print out a couple sixth-grade level things about chemistry, biology, and the solar system, memorize those and call it a day. And read a decent book about evolution, it makes sense to me but I couldn't explain the mechanics of it, which needs to change. When that happens it will probably tack on 15 minutes a day tops to memorize the definitions.

Sorry this answer is so long, I'm prompting and calling in my theater group's production and I was there from 5:45 to about 9:30. We aren't all that well prepared -five weeks to do the whole thing- so it's pretty nerve-wracking. I wish someone had a video camera so I could finally dispel the socialization myth...our director probably wants a taser to keep us in line and focused...

  6. Hi Krissy Abercrombie,

hsmomlovinit is right, my brother  homeschools and is in grade 6 and he works 6 hours a day with one 15 minute break in the morning and 1 hour lunch break.

I homeschool and I'm in grade 11 and I work 8 hours a day sometimes 9+ when you get to high school you have to work lots, it requires a lot more time devoted to getting your stuff done, you may not understand why your mom is doing this but trust me u will thank her for it when it comes time for High School. Thats pretty standard time that ur mom makes u work. It is worth it too!

  7. we have to complete a certain amount of subs. and we have to complete 180 days. some states are diff. tho

  8. I was homeschooled 3-8th grade. I usually spent 2-3 hours a day at most (sometimes skipped a day or two.). I'm now a junior and an A- student. That worked for me. It's not quantity of hours it's quality.

  9. i am homeschooled, 10th grade, I work 4, sometimes 3 hours a day, I am a night person and don't even start my work until around 8pm or even 10pm....I just work better late at night....I do an online school, fully accredited of course.  There is no time requirement for the program I use, so it's really great for people like me that like to work ahead

  10. I know 7th graders who don't even do 3 hours of work. Those who work 4.5 hours are typically high school students or those following online schooling or rigorous packaged programs.

  11. Depends on the day! SOme days atke 3 hoursa some take 8 it all depends!

  12. None, we unschool. The kids work when they want to...and it works out pretty well.

However, your mom has chosen this method, and since she rules your life, the best you can do is work quickly and get it done. Maybe compromise and ask if you can take a break and do housework halfway in the middle. ;-)

Seventh graders in schools around here usually work for 50 minutes, get a ten minute break, 50 minutes, ten minute break for four classes, then get half an hour for lunch, and then three more hours of the same pattern in the afternoon. Granted, this also includes art, pe, drama, band, etc. So not really table work.

  13. I work at least 8 or 9 hours a day.I am in the 10th grade, and they do give you a lot to do when you are in high school!!

  14. My 7th grader does 2-3 hours of school a day.

  15. By whose standard is she saying the 4.5 hr rule?  Is that your state's hour requirement?  Or hers?

My DS is doing 4th-9th grade work and he spends 2-3 hours on structured learning and another 3 on unstructed learning and/or activities.

  16. My 7th grader does 2-3 hours of school a day.
