Back in those days the standard time control was 40 moves in 2 1/2 hours for each player--which gave a 5-hour playing session.  If the game had not finished by then it was adjourned and resumed later on (generally the next day or on a specially designated adjournment day).  Time controls for all subsequent periods were 16 moves per hour for each player.
