I can't be able to sleep more than 5 hours per night, and the rest of the day I feel sleepy, until the night comes, then I can't go to sleep. When I finally go to sleep I can't catch more than 5, sometimes 6 hours of sleep if I'm lucky. Do I have insomnia, or is this normal for a person my age???

  1. I don't know what is wrong but studies have shown that everyone needs a good 8 hrs sleep to function optimally.

  2. I would say it's normal but we all need to sleep a little longer.  Try to go to bed earlier or even sleep in a different place, such as a comfy couch or a recliner.  Maybe your mattress is just uncomfortable which is causing you to lose sleep.  If this doesn't help I would consult a doctor, but I doubt you are suffering insomnia because usually that's no sleep to maybe a couple hours.  Also do you sleep or nap during the day that also may affect how many hours you sleep during the night.

  3. your sleeping patterns sound messed up. Do you work shifts or study? Try going to bed a bit earlier for the next few weeks- and no coffee, coke etc in the afternoons either. If your still having trouble your next step is the dr- but get a 2nd opinion if they try to offer you sleeping pills they cause more trouble than their worth.

  4. I have read somewhere that adults need between six and eight hours.  In any case, if you don't feel rested when you wake up, you should consult a doctor.  He or she can refer you to a sleep specialist.  You may have a medical problem.  Do not try to use over the counter sleep aids. Many times they will disrupt your sleep cycles and although you sleep longer, you will still be tired.
