There is only one direct flight to Oslo from New York (Newark, actually).  It's Continental flight #38, with a flying time of 7 hrs 45 min.  If you consider the time difference, you actually land 13 hrs 45 min after you take off.

This flight is usually the quickest route to fly between Oslo and the US, but the flight is on a rather uncomfortable 757.  In-flight movies are shown on fold-down overhead monitors every few rows, and I've been on the flight more than once when the entertainment system failed.  Also, I've heard rumors that the 757's septic system is not always large enough for the flight, and people have reported the bathrooms being closed before the end of the flight!

Adding a connection at one of the European hubs will increase the total travel time to around 10-14 hours depending on the location and length of the connection.  The most efficient routes are usually to connect in London or Copenhagen, neither of which is too far out of the way on the route to Oslo.  Copenhagen tends to have more onward connections to Oslo and a more convenient airport layout.
