  1. I echo the bag that Midnight Gobble detailed, go for the hybrids to replace your 3 and 4 iron.  You may want to consider a 3rd wedge too, but maybe that's down the line a little.

  2. The trend lately has been to carry irons 5,6,7,8,9,P,S,L, while replacing irons 3 and 4 with utility irons. The utility irons are much easier to hit with a lot more forgiveness. I like the Nike CPR utility irons (They're a bit older but I love them). Adams and Cleveland make good affordable hybrids as well.

  3. First off, leave the driver at home and tee off with the 3 wood. This will give you more confidence in getting the ball airborne. Your fairway woods should be the 5,7, and a hybrid. Then start with the 5,6,7,8,9,PW,SW and putter. That will give you 12 in total and each fairly easy to hit.  Perhaps a lesson or two on the basics of the swing would be very helpful and much practice on chipping and putting which require a development of "feel" for the shots. That is what I would recommend after having taught three sons to play.
