I am starting my first year of college and I have no idea what I want to do. I really like history, but I don's want a desk job or a boring job...I like to move around and use my hands, but what are the odds that I could find a job in archeaology?

  1. This feild is continually becoming more fascinating!

There are newer branches of archeology that study the last 30 years of human artifacts.

    Applied Arcaeology.

For example: Many archaeologist are being hired by environmental research companies to study the affects of human waste products, or to excavate and remove artifacts from designated construction sites. (Archaeologists fight to protect land that is being bought up by corporations.)

There are modern needs for archaeologist as well as new discoveries in ancient archaelogical projects.

I recommend taking a broad range of archaeology, ancient, as well as including applied arcaeology, in order to expose your self to all the interesting opportunities there are in this field!

  2. Many Archaeologist create their own world. First they find a historical event to study. Then they look for funding through private or public groups. Then they go and dig it up. As an Archaeologist develops a name, it is only then that they are involved in others work. Try Interning for an Archaeologist and see if you like it. Also, be prepared for allot of math, chemistry, physics, ecology, geology, stratigraphy, history, and meteorology.

  3. Use your resources.  Go on campus and talk to the professors and graduate students in the archeology department.  These are people who either have or will soon have jobs in the field.

Job hunting sites rarely have listings for archeology jobs, but that does not mean that they are not out there.  A few hours of talking to those who are interested in archeology could save you a world of grief later.  They might also be able to best give you details on what an archaeologist actually does and the level of education thay you will need.
