Road distance between Dharmapuri (Tamil Nadu) and Pondicherry is 265 Km. (via Kariamangalam - Kaveripattinam - Krishnagiri - Uthangarai - Chengam - Tiruvannamalai - Tindivanam). NH-47 until Krishnagiri and then right on NH-66 until Pondicherry.

If you go via Salem, then distance is 280 Km. (Dharmapuri - Omalur - Salem - Ayothiapattinam - Narasingapuram - Viluppuram - Valavanur - Pondicherry) NH-47 south until Salem. Then east on NH-68 until Veppur and then NE on NH-45 until Viluppuram and then right on NH-45A until Pondicherry.

The route suggested by Rajeev (above) is also about 285 Km but will be slower due to state roads instead of entire route by National highways. NH-47 south until Salem. Then east on NH-68 for about 78 Km until Rayappanur. Then turn left on local/state road towards Chinnasalem and go about 66 Km until Moolasamudram via Chinnasalem - Kallakkurichi - Ulundurpettai. At Moolasamudram turn left on NH-45 and go about 18.5 Km until Madapattu. Then turn right on state highway and go until Cuddalore (60 Km) via Panruti. Then turn left on NH-67 and reach Pondicherry. So, half the route is NH and half is state roads.
