How many king or rulers had the title Great. (ex. Alexandar the Great)?

  1. Peter the Great and Alfred the Great also spring to mind, as does Charlemagne (Charles the Great).

    However, who decides to give a monarch this rather odd title?  Fawning courtiers? Historians seeking to curry favour with a descendant?  The monarch's children, doubtless salving their consciences after the old king's death?

    I think I prefer the more honest titles such as Charles the Rash (of France), Philip the Fair (also of France), Edward Longshanks of England, and - one of the most honest - Robert Curthose (shortarse) of Normandy.
