normally 8 but if you are referring to the olympic trials they have 10 lanes...but only 8 are used, leaving the farthest lanes open

Olympic pools use 8 lanes for competition. In recent years they've pools wider than 8 lanes for elite competition. That way there is either a partial or full lane on either side (up to 10 lanes wide). That way no one has to swim next to a wall, where there is turbulence from reflecting waves.
