  1. Take you theory asap, then you can concentrate on the practical driving test. The theory is easy to pass, a lot of it is just common sense but I wrote down the stopping distances on my hand as I knew that would fail me and I passed first time. The hazard perception is the easiest thing ever, I just clicked randomly but not too much or they fail you for clicking too much.

I had my own car even before I got my provisional licence so as soon as I got it I was out driving and I have to say that driving my own car alot improved my driving however as I was just driving for the fun of it, not to actually learn I developed bad habits like ignoring mirrors and speeding etc.

If you do get your own car or get insured on a parent's car make sure you drive properly as my instructor always said I drive like I have already passed and need to drive like a learner.

I had about 25 lessons before passing as to be honest, I didn't need that many. I just had a couple before my tests so the instructor would take me. I took 3 tests and passed on my third one (and it was always those stupid zebra crossings that failed me - both times!!)

Just make sure you drive as a learner and do not forget mirrors and you will find out when you are ready.

  2. I would just take the test. I didn't receive many lessons and was a terrible driver because no one let me drive their car. As soon as I turned 18 I took the test, passed, and learned on my own.

  3. Until you can do it fully independently without someone having to correct you. Also make sure your comfortable doing it.

  4. It really varies from person to person.  Some people seem to be natural born drivers, they get in the car on their first lesson and everything seems to come easily to them and they are putting in for their test after 20 lessons, others take longer.  I was in the take longer group !

A good instructor will not rush you in to applying for your driving test, they will know how good you are and they won't want to put you in too early and risk you failing.

Get yourself a theory test book - the DSA (Driving Standards Association) is THE best one - and start reading that.  Once you can go through each section and answer each question correctly, that's when you put in for your theory.
