Question:

How many locks do landlords need to provide on a front door to your apartment?

I live in Maine in an apartment. Our only lock on our front door is one of the ones you push in the little button to lock it. To break in all you have to do is unscrew this little thing on the outside of the door and slide a card in. (we've had to do it once)

And that scares me.

I just read somewhere that it's required by law that there are three locks (doorknob or handle lock, deadbolt and chain/lever). Is that true?

  1. If it is, there are many people who don't follow it!!! Not once have I had three, Not even on my home do i have three. I would talk to the manager of the place. If you have any trouble, go find a copy of the renters/landlord manual. There is one, I am not sure if that is the correct name for it though. In there you will find what requirements are suppose to be meet.

  2. you should at least have a deadbolt lock
