How many many diapers?

I am 12 weeks pregnant with my first baby and I want to buy a couple packs of diapers a week to have them on hand later. How many of each size should I buy to start? Will stores let me exchange unopened packages if I need a different size and don't have the receipts?

  1. I never really bought too many diapers ahead of time.  Reason being... all babies grow differently and every store is different on their exchange policy.  And trust me after you have the baby you will not remember where all the receipts are.  I would start with a few packs of NB/Preemie diapers.  Though you're baby will most likely not be premature.  Most babies fit into preemie diapers for a few weeks.  After that get a few packs of 1,2,3.  My son was out of diapers after size 4 (very skinny child).  However, my daughter is still in 5s.  So just get a couple of each.  And also try different brands too!

  2. Buy only in advance the newborn sz.the baby will be using this size for awhile.Don' t buy other sz. in advance, as your not sure how fast the child may grow. Also always keep receipts for everything at least1yr. You never know when u may need to produce. Put these in a filing cabinets or clear baggie with your mail for easy access... Hope this helps you Congrats on your baby!!!!!!!!

  3. Yes, in most stores, you can exchange diapers for different sizes!

And you can pretty much assume that if your baby is born within the 'normal' weight range, then they will gain and graduate diaper sizes every couple of weeks.

You'll be surprised to find out how many diapers a baby uses up in a day too! -- generally about 10-15 diapers per day.

I recommend buying a big bulk box of diapers in each size, or at least the 2 smallest sizes (Newborn and Size 1) to start.

Pampers have boxes which save TONS of money in the long-term budget! A package of 40 diapers typically runs $9.99, where as a package of 240 runs $40ish.. (and if you can find coupons online or in ads, they'd be even cheaper!)

So if you have the money to shell out that much at once, go with the big boxes of 240 in size newborn and size 1. Buy one or two boxes of each if you can afford and save them up!

That'll be plenty for your baby to use for awhile. =)

Good luck on your labor! <3

  4. Be careful about buying diapers because you don't know if your baby will be sensitive to a certain brand.  I received a ton of diapers at my baby shower and my daughter ended up getting rash from most brands.  (My mom said I was the same way).  I ended up donating the ones she couldn't wear to a free clinic, so it worked out okay...but you don't want to spend that sort of money until you are a few weeks to delivery.  I doubt that stores would exchange or give refunds without receipts.

  5. I am 26 weeks pregnant has well. One brand of diapers I would not get and that parent choice. My youngest son had major reaction to those diapers. My hospital goes with pampers brand. That want I got. I got two package of newborn pampers brand. I only opening one package. That has 40 diapers in that package. I am starting to get sizes one maybe couple. I can't remember how long my children in size one. I know my oldest son was for awhile. It been four years since I had a baby around.

  6. I've returned unopened diaper packs without receipts to Walmart & Loblaws no problem. Newborns go thru 10-12 diapers a day, so best to get a few packs. I couldn't any large packs of newborn diapers. They usually have ones with 40 in them. That will last you 3-4 days.

But you won't know which ones you & your baby like til you try them. We started off with Pampers Swaddlers in the hospital & continued with them at home. Bought Huggies to try as well, but had terrible leaks with them, so we stuck with Pampers. Try getting samples of different brands to see what will work best for you & baby.

Don't bother buying different sizes right off the bat -- you'll need room for other baby things! Stick with the ones you need and then buy the next size up once the baby approaches the next diaper weight class. My 8 month old is wearing stage 3 diapers which are for 16-28 lbs, so she will wear them for a while.

  7. Maybe instead of buying the diapers you can buy gift cards from the store and use them specifically for diapers as needed.  I mean you could buy a few packs if you really wanted to but all babies are different and use the different sizes for a different ammount of time.  My boy was in a 4 forever and my friends was in 4 only for a while before he jumped to a 5.

Probably would have a hard time returning/exchanging without a receipt

  8. Yes you can exchange unopened ones at walmart and im only two months into this whole being a mom thing and i just barely moved her from newborn to size one in the last two week! My baby was small though...also you may just want to put your money for diapers away..get a few packs of newborn  now and wait and see how your baby reacts to them!! My little girl can only use huggies...everything else broke her out so I did a lot of exchanging!! Congrats and Best of Luck with the little one!!
