The Summer Olympics include 28 sports with 38 disciplines and about 300 events. (actual number changes from olympiad to olympiad, eg the IOC voted for softball and baseball are to be dropped for 2012)

so thats about 300 of each colour to start with

plus the double bronze rule used in boxing (both losing semi-finalists get a Bronze)

plus the fact that some of these events are team events and all members of the team get a medal.

so it may get to 400-500 of each colour in total.
