How many miles apart do speed limit signs legally have to be?

I am fighting a speeding ticket and I'm trying to find out exactly how far apart the signs can legally be. I'm not sure if it is nationally mandated or not. If you know that it is locally mandated, can you please tell me where I might be able to find the specific law for my area (Tuscon, Arizona)?

  1. Check with the Arizona department of transportation.

    State Transportation Board   602.712.7550

  2. I am guessing here but I'm gonna say they probably don't need to legally post a sign until the speed limit changes. If it doesn't change for 30 miles then no sign need be posted for 30 miles. But that's just conjecture on my part.

  3. 1- every time the surface you are on changes classification (ie: road, street, beltway, dirt road, on/off ramp etc.)

2- and otherwise on interstates, I noticed they were always 50 miles apart or less, especially if there are many grade changes(uphill, downhill, tight turns.)

  4. Speed limit signs are generally posted between one and two miles apart on a road.

    Check the Arizona manual
