  1. I had a 1989 Saab 9000 and it lasted over 260,000 and was still running great when I sold it. But it wasn't a turbo. In saabs with turbos the turbo WILL usually be the first thing to go out on you. And all saabs have a history of weird electrical problems. But the engine is extremely strong and transmission too. At least for manual transmissions. I can't speak for automatics. I sold my 9000 for a newer '97 saab 900 and in my past 2 years in college all I've replaced is my brakes and a wheel bearing. And I've put over 25,000 miles on it.

So overall, saabs are very reliable cars. But when something does happen to them, expect to pay more than most people for repairs.

  2. I have a lot of confidence in Saabs but I've never owned one for more than four years so I can't speak to their long-term reliability. However, Saab or not, I'd tread carefully on a car with 188k miles to the engine. That's high even for a Honda. But to that note, finding a similarly-priced Honda might give you more peace of mind for the future. A Saab is a pricey vehicle to fix and takes a special mechanic who really "gets" the Saab beast. It's not your run-of-the-mill Ford that anybody who knows engines can fix.

If you want a little more oomph in your vehicle (and its name), get an Acura. The Integra seems to have a pretty solid reputation.

    What's your price range?

  3. These are supposed to be fairly reliable, but it is difficult to find good service people and the dealer is very expensive. I have a 2000 9-5 that has cost me something like $5,000 this year in service and parts, starting around 90,000 miles. It has left me stranded multiple times. Again, 9000s are supposed to be better, but get ready for a quirky car with gremlins.

  4. A lot. The thing with Saabs though is maintenance, maintenance, maintenance! Lots of people have gotten well over 200k miles out them. You just absolutely have to keep up with maintenance. Saabs are awesome cars but they're picky. If something starts going wrong fix it or it will have a domino effect and make other things go wrong. It's best to bring the car to a Saab specialist- not just any Joe Schmo down the road at a generic car shop. With 188k miles it's probably going to need some things every once in a while. It won't be the most inexpensive car to maintain but it has the potential to last a very long time. Check out the list of high-mileage 9000's on Saabnet. Someone got over 600k on theirs.

  5. Question is does the saab has a turbo or not? Non turbo will be a better choice. Most problems with 9000 was electrical. It is true service will cost you a lot. I had 9000, and now I have 9.5 areo. Stay away from Saab if you want to keep money in your pocket.
