Depends on the car. The government has new fuel economy ratings on their website. The other answerer is not correct the fuel light does not mean there is one gallon left. The fuel gage is very inacurate so don't trust that. Take a look at the link below it will give you a pretty accurate mpg rating.

It depends on your car.  If your car as a fuel light that comes on when it's almost out of gas, that would be one gallon.  And in your owner's manual, it should say that approximate amount of miles that you will be able to go with that one gallon of gas.

If I am on the highway I can usually go around 30 miles on 1 gallon of gasoline, that is going at a steady 75-80mph on a flat stretch of highway.

In the city if I am extremely easy on the accelerator I can get around 27mpg, but when I drive faster I get around 25mpg especially when I get the Rev's high enough for VTEC to kick in in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd or 4th.

I drive a 2005 Honda Accord EX V6 6 MT.  It has 240hp and 212lb-ft of torque.  I regularly beat Honda Preludes, Acura RSX's and Integra's, BMW 3 series, (not 335i or M3), Mazda RX8's, VW GTi's, etc.  Oh ya, and my car has 108K miles on it and has never had a problem.

Fiat Panda 1.1 driven at 55 will give 48 miles. Drive at 90 it'll shake the fillings from teeth and do 28!
