  1. Judging by the fact that you bought a scion Xb, Im guessing you will be doing a lot of city driving. Red lights, stop lights, traffic, etc. That kills a car's life. You can't change that though, I just want you to know that when you hear of 200, 300, 500k miles you will not survive that long with that type of driving.

Cars dont officially die. They reach a point where things are breaking so often that it is more expensive to fix it than it is to buy a new car. The first thing that will cost you money is tires and brakes- I'm guessing at around 15-25k miles, depending how hard you drive. I got 115k miles on my silverado pick-ups brakes, but I drive easy and on the freeway often. So expect to have to pay around 400$ for tires every 20k miles and brakes sometime not long after that for about 300$. Toyotas are well manufactured in general, although I'm not sure if they sacrificed some safety in their tolerances in search of higher performance on the scion line. Assuming they didn't, you are looking at an engine and transmission that will last you many miles. I don't know if you got the manual or the automatic, if you got the manual you will have to replace the friction plate sometime in there, if you got the automatic you will have to replace the seals. Again, depending on how hard you drive your car, you should be looking at 200k miles before any major repair or rebuild on your car.

Suspension is another issue. You will have to replace your struts after about 75k miles in order to ensure good tire wear and a safe handling car. This will cost you 400-500$.

The main question for how long you will have your car is how much you like it 10 years down the road when it has 200k miles on it. When the struts, tires, brakes, and transmission all need replacement at once and you are looking at a 2,000 dollar job to make your 10 year old car last another year, or you could just give up on it and move on to a new car, possibly a fuel cell, electric, or some more advanced combustion car.

That should give you some idea of what to expect

  2. It depends on how they were taken care of.

Honda's are the longest lasting cars.

    Toyota is 2nd.

Even the least reliable car can last 1 million miles if they are taken care of.

But most people do not take care of cars like they should, even if they think they do.

The average miles that last is close to 300,000 miles.
