    every map should have a scale.

    a scale can be represented in 3 ways:

    by using words (ex one inch is equal to 500 miles)

    by using a scale bar

    by using a ratio (ex 1:500000 - which would translate to 1 inch on the map is equal to 500000 inches on the earth)
