  1. This would depend on how you wanted to travel.

If you flew the fastest would be Luthansa from LAX to Frankfurt in Central Germany which takes about 10 hours and 40 minutes non-stop.

If you wanted to go all by ship it would take 84 days saling on a combination of the Queen Victoria and the QE2

If you wanted to take your car, you could drive across the country, it takes 42 hours continuous driving to cross the country.  Assuming you need to sleep 8 hours, and eat, get gas, and take rest room breaks, you can figure a maximum of 14 hours driving most days or 3 days from LA to New York, then you would have to board a ship and also tranship your car, which would take 6 days to England, then it would be a 9 hour drive to Central Germany, so figure a minmum of 10 days.

If you wanted to cover the whole distance walking except for the 6 days at sea, it would take 67 days walking 3 mph (avg human walking speed) from LA to NY at 14 hours walking per day, then another 12 days from London to Central Germany for a total of 85 days with the sea days included.

(so it only takes one more day to walk than to sail, but the ship makes a lot of port calls)

  2. It would be helpful if you would specify particular landmarks when posing this sort of question.  Since both California and Germany are rather large pieces of real estate, it's hard to tell exactly from which point to measure.

Incidentally, http://www.etn.nl/distanc4.htm says that the distance from Sacramento Airport in California (in the general vicinity of the geographic center of California) is 9009 Kilometers or 5597 Miles or 4864 Nautical Miles from the airport at Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany (which isn't more than a couple hours drive from the geographic center of Germany).

  3. The total distance from California to  Germany is appx. 5,600 miles.  It is about 11 hours, 30 minutes by plane.

The current time in California is 7:20 PM on Saturday, July 12, 2008.

Germany is 9 hours ahead of LAX.

The time in Germany is 4:20 AM on Sunday, July 13, 2008.
