Note that on average in the US, diesel fuel is about 70 cents more expensive than regular gasoline:  http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/oog/info/gdu/ga...

and to find a diesel VW Golf in the US, you'll have to buy used...  Diesel's emissions are so dirty that new they couldn't be sold in California emission states.  VW hasn't offered the Golf model in the US since the 2006 model year.

I own a 2007 Prius and I get 50mpg in the summer and 44 mpg in the winter doing about 50/50 city/highway driving.

I keep it at about 65 mph on the highway.

I don't own the VW TDI, but they will be much more expensive from a purchase price and a fuel perspective (diesel costs more) than the hybrid.
