  1. I drove a 1979 242 for fourteen years, amassing 375,000 miles in the process. All I ever did was change the oil every 3000 miles and the fuel filter every 6000 miles. The car received no extraordinary care and nothing much more than routine maintenance. When I traded it in 1993 for a 740 it was sold to  someone locally who still has it. My 740 rolled up 124000 miles until I traded it in for a '98 S90, possibly the worst car I ever had. It's just too bad that Volvo went the way of everyone else and sacrificed durability for who knows what???

Bottom line, new Volvos are mere shadows of the older models.

  2. Some Volvo's are better than other. Not all volvos are created equally.  The rear drive ones have longer lives.  1982 240 DL @ 300,000 needed a new floor it rusted out,  junked it.    1993 940 turbo still going very strong at 225000. 96 850 Turbo 178,000 also going strong.

  3. i believe it will last you at least 300,000 miles. Very few brands will last that long, Volvo is one of them.

  4. I think at least 200000 miles are easy.

    Very famous for tough car.

  5. I am driving a '93 940. It has over 200k. I hade a running 960 with 320k.

  6. well over 2 million miles if you take care of it.  No, I am not joking or pulling your leg.  Here is my proof:  http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/26/man-w...

  7. I have a '97 960, that has 182000 miles & still going strong.

  8. Yes, it's true.  There is a Volvo that has lasted 2 million miles, but that is by far a stretch of what most people achieve in their Volvos.  It really depends on what model Volvos you are talking about.  If you are talking about the older Volvos, say 1998 and earlier, they are excellent cars from a mechanical standpoint.  Those will easily last over 200k miles with general upkeep. My mother put 224k miles on her first Volvo, an '89 740 Turbo and currently has 176k on her 1995 940 and she is very hard on her cars.  I very easily put 164k miles on my '85 240 without blinking.  Models newer than 1998 are much more problematic and much more expensive to repair for some reason.  The turbo and V6 engines have a lifespan of 50k-150k typically and the transmissions fair about the same.  The only new Volvos worth considering have the non-turbo 2.4L 5cyl. engine (S40 and S60).  Volvo has been using that motor since 1993 and it was their last great engine design before Ford took over.
