  1. Immanuel Who?   Don't confuse philosophy with practical experience and knowledge of the world.

(Approx 6 million... ex aircrew for nearly 40 years)

  2. if you're talking miles from home, around 900. Total? probably around 200,000.

  3. I am not sure what you are intending to say by your question. "It is known" would probably be better English than "It is learnt".  Lernt is 3rd person singular in German for (he,she, it) learns. Is it that there is more than enough knowledge can be gained without experiencing the world outside of your own back yard?

If that is what you are implying then my reply is that intelligence is not controlled by travel distance... nor is happiness. Immanuel Kant may not have traveled more than 50 miles from his birthplace but you must take into account the time of his life. This was hardly unique to his existence. Most who lived in the 1700's seldom traveled further than that distance. Does it mean you  can't have a good life these days without travel? Most Amish have not ventured past their own town and seem genuinely happy. I have patients who have not ventured past the walls of their bedroom due to paranoid schizophrenia and I would not call them enlightened or happy.

My personal thoughts are that the more I know of how other people live, the more tolerant and aware of why people live differently than I do. I come to an understanding that their life is different, not wrong and fits their needs. If I only knew of things in my small space, it would be difficult to learn tolerance of other ideas or assimilate things I have seen that  may benefit me in my life. The furthest I have been from home is about 12,000 miles away. I couldn't get any further than that or I would be actually getting closer. As far as where I have traveled, almost the entire USA, Europe, India, Africa, Central America, South America. On each trip I come to appreciate a little bit more of the world I live in from these experiences I have gained.

The question you should ask yourself is whether Immanuel Kant would have traveled around Europe or the world if he had the funds to do so and the ability to travel. My guess is that he would have loved to entertain the idea. Observing life from many vantage points may have strengthened many of his arguments or conclusions and challenged others to the point of re-thinking them.
