How many milliters of 0.400 M NaOH are required to completely neutralize 20.0 ml of 0.200 M HCl ?

  1. M1V1 = M2V2

    (.400)V1 = (.200)(20)

    Solve for V1.

    V1 = (.200)(20)/.400

    V1 = 10 mL

  2. with complete neutralization that means that the meq of base = meq of acid..therefore at the endpoint

      VacidMacid = VolbaseMbase

    20 mL ( 0.2M ) = Volbase ( 0.4 M )

    {(20 mL )(0.2M )}/0.4 M = Volbase

    the M cancels and the answer is 10 mL of the 0.4 M NaOH solution
